“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain”

~ Vivian Greene

It is a rainy day here in Upstate New York, and what better way to enjoy the weather but with a rainy day art project! This is a simple one that you can do from start to finish in just a few minutes. Here is the process:

First, gather your supplies. The only things you need for this project are washable markers and thick white card stock or poster board. Create your art. When deciding what to create for this project, the simpler, the better (as you will see in the next step). Also, try to fill up as much of the paper as possible, as this creates the best overall effect.

Next, lay your paper out in the rain on a flat surface. I put mine on our back deck. You can see the rain making its magic in the above photo. How long you leave the artwork out in the rain depends on how hard it’s raining, and how much splattering and color bleeding you would like. Keep an eye on it, as the transformation can happen fast. I let it rain on our artwork for maybe 20-30 seconds.

This is what the artwork looks like when it is still wet. Isn’t it fantastic? The washable markers are key, as the rain is literally washing the color off the paper.

Make sure to keep the artwork flat when moving it from the outdoors, as the colors will continue to run if the artwork is tipped. Of course depending on the picture you created, additional mixing and running of colors can create a cool look:

Warning: This art project is addictive! We couldn’t seem to get enough of it!  When the artwork dried, we especially loved how the washed out areas ended up having a tie dye or batik look to them.

Once dry, you can leave your artwork as is, hang it on the wall or refrigerator, or create some fun and festive lanterns like we did:

Have you ever tried rain painting like this? What are your favorite rainy day art projects? We would love to hear them and share them with our readers! Comment in the section below or post on our Facebook page.
