April Showers & May Flowers Lesson Plan
Supply List:
- White paper provided by Original Works, or another high-quality, 70# 8 ½” x 11” art paper
- Colorful finger paints
- Forks (metal or plastic)
- Paper towels or wet wipes
- Paper plates
Project Prep:
Ahead of completing this project with students, we recommend creating the project yourself so you can show the students an example of the finished product and demonstrate some of the techniques that will be used to complete it.
Just before getting into this project with the kids, put a few drops of different colored finger paints on paper plates. Hand out the plates, along with paper, forks and a paper towel or wet wipe for each child. (They’ll need to wipe their fingers and forks between colors.)
April Showers & May Flowers Finger Paint Project Instructions:
Getting Started:
- As mentioned previously, before launching into the project, you’ll want to show the students an example of the finished painting to give them an idea of what they are working towards. Be sure to demonstrate how to go about using the forks dipped in paint to create the flowers. It’s also helpful to remind the students that they’ll need room at the top of the paper for raindrops, and a the bottom for the flower stems.
- Remind students that they’ll want to wipe their fingers and forks off between paint colors, unless they are strategically mixing colors for their masterpiece.
Hands-On:
- Have the students start by making a series of flowers with their forks across the middle of the page.
- Next, students will use their fingers to paint stems beneath the flowers. They may also want to paint some grass below the stems.
- After painting the stems and grass, kids can move on to making finger print raindrops above the flowers.
- Once all of the elements have been painted, it’s time to let the project dry!
Finishing the Project:
- Once the paintings are complete and fully dry, students can sign the front of their artwork at least 1” away from the edge of the paper.
